Library To Host Titanic Dinner

TOMS RIVER - Ocean County history buffs, gourmets and wine connoisseurs can enjoy one of the finest dining experiences in history on September 28 at 7 p.m., as the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library hosts “The Last Dinner on the Titanic” at the library, 101 Washington Street. The seven-course dinner will be a replica of the final meal served in the Titanic’s first-class dining room on the fateful night the Titanic went down on April 14, 1912.

The first-class dinner menu was one of two that survived, according to “Last Dinner on the Titanic: Menus and Recipes from the Great Liner” author Rick Archbold, who will be a featured guest at the event.

The dinner enjoyed by some of the Titanic’s most renowned passengers is based on the nineteenth-century French multi-course meal designed by Auguste Escoffier and will be prepared by Chef Ian Smith and the students of the Culinary Arts program at the Lakehurst center of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School.

Wine will also be served and musical entertainment will be provided by the Garden State Philharmonic String Quartet. Formal or period dress is encouraged.

A limited number of seats are available for a donation of $75 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts of the Hancock County Library, Mississippi.

To reserve seating, please contact Harry Applegate Jr. at 732-914-5408 by September 14.

“Titanic’s little sister celebrated her first glorious year back in Belfast with a party this week.

Almost 16,000 visitors have crossed the gangplank at Queen’s Quay in Belfast to explore SS Nomadic since her doors were flung open at Easter.

Meanwhile, hundreds of volunteers have laboured for months to transform the ship back into the elegant tender that carried first class passengers onto the Titanic on her ill-fated maiden voyage. ” Visit the link below for the exciting updates about Nomadic.

smiley1.jpgA recent blog post containing an article about the current Carpathia wreck dive has had an update.  The newspaper interview with a crewman indicates the ship’s bell and loving cup are high on the priority list for recovery. Well, they may find the ship’s bell, but apparently the famous cup presented to Captain Rostron by the intrepid Molly Brown is safely ensconced in the Merseyside Museum.  Maybe someone should send a wireless quick . . . .?
