“Titanic’s little sister celebrated her first glorious year back in Belfast with a party this week.

Almost 16,000 visitors have crossed the gangplank at Queen’s Quay in Belfast to explore SS Nomadic since her doors were flung open at Easter.

Meanwhile, hundreds of volunteers have laboured for months to transform the ship back into the elegant tender that carried first class passengers onto the Titanic on her ill-fated maiden voyage. ” Visit the link below for the exciting updates about Nomadic.

smiley1.jpgA recent blog post containing an article about the current Carpathia wreck dive has had an update.  The newspaper interview with a crewman indicates the ship’s bell and loving cup are high on the priority list for recovery. Well, they may find the ship’s bell, but apparently the famous cup presented to Captain Rostron by the intrepid Molly Brown is safely ensconced in the Merseyside Museum.  Maybe someone should send a wireless quick . . . .?

The Hannibal City Council voted to accept an offer by the owners of the Molly Brown home to receive the property. The house that was home to the colorful Molly Brown of Titanic fame sits along Denkler’s Alley, just off Mark Twain Avenue, west of Third Street. It took just one speedy vote for the city council to approve the transfer.

Titanic passenger Madeleine Mellinger

Posted in Potpourri, Survivors, Titanic Personalities on September 4, 2007 by titanicinternational

titanic1.jpg Canadian Living.com has released an interesting story today by a grandchild of a survivor.  Memories of the fatal voyage were recorded in a diary which has now been appreciated and shared by Madeleine Mellinger’s granddaughter.

“Madeleine had been a stranger to me as I had no memories of her, but suddenly I wanted so much to know her, but I couldn’t. She was gone, and the diary was all that was left. Like most teenage girls I put the ghosts of the past aside and got caught up in the here and now, worried instead about boys and bad hair days. I’m sad to say I let thoughts of my grandmother fade into the background. ” For the entire article visit this link http://www.canadianliving.com/CanadianLiving/client/en/today/DetailNews.asp?idNews=237595&bSearch=True

Second Officer David Blair, was removed from the crew at the last minute and in his hurry forgot to hand this key to his replacement.  According to some experts, this is the key which would have unlocked the compartment for binoculars for the crow’s nest, which according to Fred Fleet, crewman in the crow’s nest at the time of the impact, might have made all the difference.   It is expected to fetch more than Lm45,000 on the 22 September auction.  For the complete story visit the link below.

Phase of the Moon April 15, 1912

Posted in Potpourri on August 28, 2007 by titanicinternational

new2.jpg  “New Moon in the arms of the Old Moon”

The moon was waning to her last quarter when the Titanic set out from Southampton.  By the time of the impact with the iceberg on the evening of Sunday, April 14th, all that remained was a pale sliver before the new moon.  Below are the moon phases for April 1912, courtesy of NASA archives.  Many old superstitions surround the phases of the moon.  A man catches a glimpse of the new moon over his left shoulder, and he says: “This is bad luck.” It was considered an antidote for bad luck to turn over the paper money in a wallet at the new moon, thus guaranteeing good financial fortune for the future weeks.  As the moon and tides are forever entertwined, death comes on the ebbing tide and ebbing moon, so the folklore goes.  The waning moon proved bad luck and ill fortune for those aboard Titanic.
