“On February 11, 2008, the chairman of the Ocean Liner Council of the South Street Seaport Museum announced that John P. Eaton and Charles Haas will be the next Silver Riband Award Recipients.  The award ceremony will be held at the museum on October 18, 2008 at 2 p.m.  A special exhibit of Titanic artifacts culled from the museum’s collection will be assembled for this program”.

It is the desire of the Ocean Liner Council to celebrate and recognize the life’s work of John P. Eaton and Charles Haas and their long dedication to the perpetual history of the R.M.S. Titanic.  Their scholarship, authorship of numerous periodicals and books, and significant enthusiasm for continuing exhibits, lectures and research, sets them apart in the realm of great ocean liner history.

“Previous recipients include Frank Braynard, Hisashi Noma, Bill Miller, Commodore Ronald Warwick, and John Maxtone-Graham”.

Cameron’s Titanic 10 Years Later

Posted in Potpourri, What's in Voyage ? on October 16, 2007 by titanicinternational

titanic-movie.jpg Dec. 19, 2007, will mark the 10th anniversary of the James Cameron film “Titanic.”

Barb Shuttle, editor of Voyage, the journal of Titanic International Society, is asking for contributions for a retrospective on the movie. … how did the film affect you, and what effect did it have on your love of Titanic? (You do not have to be a member to respond, but of course the invitation to join is always open!)

She’d like to receive enough responses to make this a viable and interesting piece for Voyage. But that will depend on enough people sharing their thoughts. Whether it’s a paragraph or two, or a longer essay, jot down your thoughts and feelings about the movie “Titanic” and its impact and e-mail them to Barb at

Nov. 1 is the deadline for articles for the next issue, so think about this soon!

Library To Host Titanic Dinner

TOMS RIVER - Ocean County history buffs, gourmets and wine connoisseurs can enjoy one of the finest dining experiences in history on September 28 at 7 p.m., as the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library hosts “The Last Dinner on the Titanic” at the library, 101 Washington Street. The seven-course dinner will be a replica of the final meal served in the Titanic’s first-class dining room on the fateful night the Titanic went down on April 14, 1912.

The first-class dinner menu was one of two that survived, according to “Last Dinner on the Titanic: Menus and Recipes from the Great Liner” author Rick Archbold, who will be a featured guest at the event.

The dinner enjoyed by some of the Titanic’s most renowned passengers is based on the nineteenth-century French multi-course meal designed by Auguste Escoffier and will be prepared by Chef Ian Smith and the students of the Culinary Arts program at the Lakehurst center of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School.

Wine will also be served and musical entertainment will be provided by the Garden State Philharmonic String Quartet. Formal or period dress is encouraged.

A limited number of seats are available for a donation of $75 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts of the Hancock County Library, Mississippi.

To reserve seating, please contact Harry Applegate Jr. at 732-914-5408 by September 14.
